What Hermit Sage Does

Hermit Sage is the strongest sanity passive in the game — a rank 5 slot for workers you want to run maintenance-free:

  • SAN drains 50% slower — far ahead of Workaholic (-15%) and Positive Thinker (-10%).
  • Work Speed -20% — the trade-off that decides which Pals should carry it.
  • World Tree harvestables won't vanish when approached — the ghostly trees and ore nodes inside the World Tree normally crumble as you get close. The effect covers both the Pal and its trainer.

How to Get It

No Pal has Hermit Sage by default, and it isn't in the normal wild-passive pool — it's one of the seven World Tree exclusive passives. There are two ways to get it:

  • Wild World Tree Pals. Pals that spawn inside the World Tree can randomly roll World Tree exclusive passives, Hermit Sage among them. It's a lucky find rather than a farmable source, but check the passives of anything you catch there. Yakumo's Birds of a Feather partner skill can't speed this up — it only boosts passives from the regular wild pool, which excludes all World Tree passives.
  • The disposable implant. Disposable Implant: Hermit Sage teaches Hermit Sage at the Pal Surgery Table — the surgery itself is free, but the implant is consumed.

The implant comes from the Ancient Relic Recycler : every recycle of an Ancient Relic — any grade, including cheap Decayed ones — rolls exactly one disposable implant from a 16-implant pool, so Hermit Sage lands at 6.25% per recycle. And since the implant is one-and-done, finish breeding, rank-ups, and IVs before you spend it. See the Ancient Relics guide for the full reward tables, the implants guide for how surgery works, and the best passive skills guide for how it fits a four-slot build.

Tips

  • Give it to background workers, not crafters. On ranch, farm, and transport Pals doing slow jobs around the clock, the SAN breaks you skip — and the hot-spring trips that go with them — are worth far more than 20% work speed. On a dedicated crafter the math flips: Demon’s Hand is the slot that job wants.
  • Stack it for a zero-maintenance Pal. Adding Workaholic and Positive Thinker reaches -75% SAN drain — a Pal that essentially never needs sanity care.
  • It unlocks night-shift builds. Sleep is how Pals recover SAN, so Insomnia crews burn out fast — Hermit Sage is the passive that makes a round-the-clock worker sustainable.
  • It doubles as harvest insurance. The World Tree decay immunity means any Pal carrying it — even a humble transporter you bring along — lets you harvest the World Tree's vanishing trees and ore.
No pals have this passive skill by default.
