What the Breeding Farm Does
Assign one male and one female pal to a Breeding Farm, drop a cake in its chest, and the pair produces an egg. It's the entire foundation of end-game pal building: breeding is how you move passive skills onto a species that can't roll them in the wild, how you push IVs upward, and the only reliable route to mutated pals. The offspring species is decided by a fixed combination table, not by chance — our breeding guide explains the full mechanics, and the breeding calculator works out which pair produces what.
How to Build It
- It's a boss technology: unlocking it costs 2 Ancient Technology Points at level 19, and the technology stays locked until you've beaten the Lyleen tower boss.
- Materials are trivial by that point — 10 Wooden Boards, 20 Stone and 50 Fiber — but the build itself takes 15,000 work, three times a typical station.
- It draws no power and needs no assigned worker beyond the breeding pair, but it does take a large physical footprint and must sit inside a base.
- There's no per-base cap on Breeding Farms. Serious breeders run several in a dedicated base, since each one only works on a single pair at a time.
How Long an Egg Takes
The farm's parameter component sets 300 seconds of real time per egg — five minutes flat, and it's real time rather than in-game time, so it keeps ticking regardless of the day/night cycle. That figure is fixed; no pal stat, work suitability or food speeds it up.
For scale, the Ancient Hatchery sets the same value to 10 seconds — a 30× speedup on the same mechanic, which is the real reason it replaces a room full of Breeding Farms rather than merely supplementing them.
Cakes: What Each One Actually Changes
Every egg consumes one cake, and which cake you stock is the single biggest lever you have over what hatches. Plain Cake is the baseline with no bonus at all; the four specialist cakes each modify a different part of the roll:
| Cake | Effect | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Cake | Baseline — one egg, no bonuses. | 5 Flour, 8 Red Berries, 7 Milk, 8 Egg, 2 Honey |
| Mushroom Cake | Adds +1 to +5 to the offspring's IVs. | 5 Flour, 5 Mushroom, 3 Cavern Mushroom, 8 Egg, 2 Honey |
| Vegetable Cake | Two eggs from one breeding cycle instead of one. | 8 Flour, 8 Tomato, 7 Lettuce, 8 Egg, 4 Honey |
| Extravagant Vegetable Cake | +1 to +5 IVs and +2% mutation chance — the Mushroom Cake bonus plus mutations. | 12 Flour, 8 Cotton Candy, 10 Potato, 6 Onion, 8 Carrot |
| Special Cake | Forces 4 inherited passive skills and passes down all of the parents' active skills. | 20 Flour, 8 Caramel Cotton Candy, 15 Milk, 15 Egg, 2 Mammorest Meat |
Two things worth pulling out of that table. Special Cake overrides the passive-inheritance roll entirely — instead of the usual random 0–3 passives, every egg inherits four, which turns passive breeding from a numbers game into a near-deterministic one. And Vegetable Cake is the only cake that changes throughput, doubling eggs per cycle rather than improving their quality; it's the right stock when you're breeding for volume, such as feeding condensation at the Pal Essence Condenser.
Cakes are expensive to bake — 200,000 to 600,000 work each, climbing with tier — so a breeding base realistically needs its own Ranch, plantations and Mill feeding it rather than hand-crafted supply.
Mutated Eggs
A small share of eggs come out Mutated, hatching something unrelated to the parents' normal combination result. Extravagant Vegetable Cake is the only cake that raises the odds, adding a flat +2% mutation chance. Which pal a mutated egg produces isn't random either — it's driven off the parents' combination ranks, and our mutation calculator will show you the possible outcomes for any pair. The Mutated Pals guide covers the rates and what's worth targeting.
Tips
- Keep the chest stocked. The farm stops dead the moment it runs out of cake, and a pair sitting idle is five minutes of egg time lost per cycle. Bulk-bake and dump 20 at a time.
- Breeding pals don't work. A pal assigned to the farm is out of your base's labour pool entirely, so don't park your best miner in there and wonder why production stalled.
- Match the cake to the goal. Special Cake when you're chasing a specific four-passive build, Extravagant Vegetable when you're mutation-hunting, Vegetable when you just need bodies, Mushroom when you're polishing IVs on a pair whose passives are already right.
- Check the pair before you commit. Five minutes an egg adds up fast on a wrong pairing — run it through the breeding calculator first, or open any pal's breeding tab to see every combination that produces it.
- Graduate to the Ancient Hatchery when you can. At level 76 it merges the farm and the incubator into one machine, breeds 30× faster, and raises rare-skill inheritance on top.
