Palworld Breeding Guide: Combos, Passive Inheritance, Cakes, and Eggs

How breeding really works in Palworld: the combination-rank formula behind every offspring, unique combos and self-breeding exclusives, exact passive inheritance odds, IVs, every cake, gender chances, egg hatching — plus quick primers on Mutated Eggs and implants.

Breeding is Palworld's entire end game in one structure: it's how you obtain species you can't catch, how you stack four perfect passive skills on one Pal, how you push IVs toward 100, and the only source of Mutated Eggs. Every rule in the system is deterministic — the game just never explains any of them. This guide covers the full mechanics, from the formula that decides every offspring to what each cake actually changes, with our Breeding Calculator doing the math for any pair you're considering.

Breeding basics

Assign one male and one female Pal to a Breeding Farm (an Ancient Technology at level 19) and stock its chest with cake — the pair produces an egg every 5 minutes of real time, consuming one cake per egg. The egg then goes into an incubator to hatch. A few ground rules:

  • Any male and female can pair — there are no compatibility groups. What comes out is decided by the combination rules below.
  • Breeding Pals leave the labor pool. A Pal on the farm does no other base work, and no stat or work suitability makes the pair produce faster — only a few dedicated passives and partner skills do.
  • No cake, no eggs. The farm stops dead the moment the chest is empty, so bulk-bake before long sessions.
  • The late-game upgrade is the Ancient Hatchery (level 76) — it merges farm and incubator into one machine, produces eggs 30× faster (10 seconds instead of 300), and its description notes an increased inheritance rate for rare skills.

How the offspring species is decided

Every species carries a hidden combination rank in the game data — roughly, a breeding "weight" where lower numbers belong to rarer, stronger Pals. The child of a generic pairing is computed, not rolled:

  1. Average the two parents' ranks, rounding half up: target = floor((rank₁ + rank₂ + 1) / 2).
  2. The offspring is the breedable species whose rank is closest to that target.
  3. On an exact tie between two species, a second hidden value (the game's duplicate priority) breaks it — in practice the species with the higher rank number wins the tie.

A worked example straight from the data:

What the formula implies:

  • Results are 100% deterministic. The same two species always produce the same offspring species, for every player, every time. Parent order and gender don't matter (with one exception).
  • Same species → same species. A self-pair's target is its own rank, so breeding two of a kind always produces more of that kind — the standard way to mass-produce a Pal for Pal Essence Condenser fodder.
  • You can't out-breed your best parent. The target is a midpoint, so a generic pairing never lands beyond the stronger parent's rank. The top of the chart — legendaries and most subspecies — is walled off entirely.
  • Many pairs collapse to the same child. Only 182 species can result from rank averaging, so with tens of thousands of possible pairs, dozens of combinations hit each species — any Pal's page lists every combination that produces it in its breeding tab, and the Breeding Calculator's target mode does the reverse lookup.

A note on other sites: several auto-generated combo databases apply the raw datamine without the game's native-code exceptions, so they list combinations that cannot actually happen (most famously for Aegidron ). Our calculator mirrors the verified in-game algorithm.

Unique combos and exclusive Pals

A layer of hand-authored rules sits on top of the rank math and overrides it whenever it applies:

  • 136 unique combos. Specific parent pairs produce a fixed child regardless of ranks — this is how most element subspecies are made (for example, a specific pairing is the only cross-species route to each "Ignis" or "Cryst" variant).
  • One combo cares about gender — the only one in the game: Katress × Wixen . A male Katress with a female Wixen produces Wixen Noct ; flip the genders and you get Katress Ignis .
  • 122 exclusive Pals sit outside the rank system. Legendaries, most subspecies, and other special Pals can never appear as the result of generic rank averaging. Each is obtainable only through its own unique combo (if it has one) or by self-pairing two copies — which is why catching that first pair of a legendary matters: once you own two, the line sustains itself.

Pals that break the rules

  • Panthalus and Astralym cannot breed at all. The game refuses to place either in a Breeding Farm — they appear in no combination as parent or child, and no egg ever hatches one. The calculator flags them if you try.
  • Aegidron never comes from normal breeding. It hatches only from Mutated Eggs (legendary self-pairs produce it deterministically) or by defeating its fixed World Tree boss. Once owned, it breeds normally as a parent.

Gender odds

Offspring gender is rolled per species, not 50/50 across the board — every species has a fixed male probability in the game data. Most sit at exactly 50%, but 44 species are skewed, some heavily. When you're hunting the rarer gender for a breeding pair, these are the ones that hurt:

Only the strongly skewed species (30/70 or worse) are listed; another two dozen lean more gently. A female Kingpaca or a male Elizabee is a genuinely rare drop — when one hatches, keep it.

Passive skill inheritance

This is what most breeding programs are really about. The offspring draws its passives from the combined pool of both parents' passive skills, plus a chance of random extras from the wild pool. The exact distribution isn't in the exported data tables — it lives in compiled code — but community datamining has established the model, and it's the one our calculator uses:

The practical consequences:

  • Keep the parents' pool clean. Inherited passives are drawn from the union of both parents' skills, good and bad alike — a parent carrying a junk passive pollutes every roll. The ideal setup is parents that together hold exactly the four passives you want and nothing else.
  • The Special Cake replaces the roll. Feed the pair a Special Cake and the egg inherits exactly 4 passives from the parents plus all their active skills — with a clean four-passive pool, that's a guaranteed perfect child.
  • Random extras can save or ruin an egg. The 60% chance of at least one random passive is how fresh lines pick up skills neither parent had — and how "finished" eggs hatch with Coward attached. Note that 30 passives (boss and mutation exclusives) never roll randomly; those have to be inherited or implanted.
  • Compute the real odds, don't guess. The Breeding Calculator's pair mode takes both parents' actual passives and gives exact per-egg probabilities for your target set. For which passives are worth all this effort, see the best passive skills guide.

Active skills and IVs

Two more things pass from parents to child, both quieter than passives but worth managing on a final breed:

  • Active skills. Offspring hatch knowing their species' level-up moves plus a chance at skills carried by the parents — including moves the species could never learn itself, such as those taught by skill fruits. The Special Cake again removes the randomness: all of the parents' active skills transfer.
  • IVs (individual values). Each Pal has hidden 0–100 IVs for HP, Attack, and Defense that scale the stat meaningfully at high levels. Offspring IVs are derived from the parents' — high-IV parents produce high-IV lines — though the exact roll, like passive counts, lives in compiled code. The two IV cakes (Mushroom and Extravagant Vegetable) add a flat +1–5 to the offspring's IVs on top, which is how lines get nudged to 100 over generations.

Cakes

Every egg consumes one cake, and the cake is your main lever over egg quality. All five, straight from the breeding-effect data:

Match the cake to the goal: Special when finishing a four-passive build, Extravagant Vegetable when mutation hunting, Vegetable when you need volume (condensation fodder), Mushroom when polishing IVs, plain Cake for everything else. Cakes are expensive to bake — 200,000 to 600,000 work each, climbing with tier — so a serious breeding base grows and ranches its own ingredients; the Breeding Farm structure guide lists every cake's full recipe.

Eggs and hatching

  • The egg type reveals the species' element — a Dark Egg holds a Dark Pal — and its size tracks the species' rarity, from common eggs up to Huge eggs for the rarest stock. Bigger eggs take proportionally longer to hatch, and your world's egg-incubation setting multiplies all hatch times.
  • The basic Egg Incubator is the only one that cares about temperature. Eggs in the wrong climate hatch slowly — Scorching Eggs want heaters, Frozen Eggs want coolers.   • The Ancient Hatchery incubates its own eggs at high speed, no separate incubator needed.
  • Wild eggs are a separate loop — eggs found in the world hatch random wild Pals, not bred ones. With Broncherry or Broncherry Aqua in your party, picked-up eggs have a 35% or 45% chance of becoming Alpha Pal Eggs (rising to 45% and 55% at max condensation) — and Grintale multiplies how many you carry home.

Making it all faster

The 5-minute egg timer ignores work speed stats — but two passive skills and a trio of partner skills accelerate every stage of the loop, and they're easy to miss:

  • Grintale duplicates your eggs. Its Glaring Cat's Eye partner skill gives every Pal Egg you pick up a 50% chance of producing an extra copy — 75% at max condensation. In the game data the effect keys off egg pickup itself, with no wild-only restriction — and since eggs are always collected by hand anyway, just make sure Grintale is in your party before you sweep the farms. For the price of one party slot, that's roughly 1.5–1.75 eggs for every one bred — the single biggest free multiplier in the whole system.
  • Philanthropist (passive) — +100% breeding speed while its carrier is assigned to a Breeding Farm. It rolls on wild Pals and inherits like any passive, so breed it onto a dedicated pair of "breeders".
  • Babysitter (passive) — +30% egg production and +30% incubation speed for the base's Breeding Farms while the carrier is at the base. It's one of the five mutation-exclusive passives, so a carrier is itself a lucky hatch.
  • Braloha — its Balmy Weather partner skill speeds up egg production at the base's Breeding Farms by +20%, scaling to +50% at max condensation, just for being stationed at the base. It doesn't stack with a second Braloha, but it's a set-and-forget boost on top of what your breeding pair carries.
  • Dynamoff — the incubation counterpart: its Electro-Massage Incubation partner skill hatches the base's eggs 20% faster, up to 40% at max condensation, while Dynamoff is at the base.
  • Run parallel farms — there's no per-base cap — or graduate to the Ancient Hatchery's 30× cycle. Multiple incubators beside the farms remove the hatching bottleneck.

Mutated Eggs in brief

Roughly 1% of breeds produce a bonus Mutated Egg alongside the normal one — the Extravagant Vegetable Cake adds +2%, roughly tripling the odds. A mutated egg ignores everything above: it hatches a different species (drawn from a pool set by the parents' combination ranks), always as an Alpha with 2 condensation stars, always carrying one of five mutation-exclusive passives, and with very high IVs. Implants in brief

Breeding isn't the only way to change a passive. The Pal Surgery Table applies implants that overwrite a passive slot directly — reusable permanent implants for common passives, single-use disposable implants (from Ancient Relic recycling) for the rare ones. The efficient pattern: breed until three of four passives are right, then implant the fourth instead of gambling on more eggs. The implants guide covers every implant and where to get it.

A practical breeding workflow

  1. Plan the chain backwards. Put your target species into the Breeding Calculator's target mode (or open the species' breeding tab) and pick the pair you can actually field.
  2. Build passive carriers first. Catch or breed Pals holding the passives you want, then funnel them toward your target pair — passives travel between species with every generation, so the skills can arrive from completely unrelated lines.
  3. Mind genders early. You need your carriers in opposite genders at each step — skewed species can be the slowest part of a chain.
  4. Keep pools clean, then finish with a Special Cake. Once a male and female between them hold exactly the four target passives, Special Cake eggs are near-guaranteed perfect — switch to Mushroom or Extravagant Vegetable afterwards if you're still pushing IVs.
  5. Patch the last slot with an implant rather than restarting a line for one passive.
  6. Let the surplus work for you. Failed hatches feed the Pal Essence Condenser , and every egg is a fresh ~1% roll at a Mutated Egg — breeding programs pay out even when they miss.
